IELTS

TEST OVERVIEW

What Is The IELTS Test?
The full meaning of IELTS is International English Language Testing System. It is designed to assess the language ability of candidates who need to study or work where English is the language of communication. It is not considered suitable for candidates under 16 years old.
Many academic institutions, employers and immigration authorities require you to have a certain IELTS score before your application is accepted.
Parts of the IELTS test, namely the reading and writing modules differ, depending on whether you are taking the Academic or General Training version. Academic is for those wanting to study abroad while General Training is aimed at those wishing to emigrate or work abroad.
If you haven’t already done so, you should visit us to get information.
IELTS – General & Academic
The first question to ask when you find out you have to take the IELTS exam is:
“Which version of the IELTS should I take? The Academic or the General Version?”
This is important because the scores are not interchangeable so there’s no point in studying for or appearing for the wrong exam! We strongly encourage you to find out specifically, in your case, which version of the exam you need to do, based on the requirements of your receiving institution.
The Academic IELTS exam is the more advanced test. This version is generally used to determine whether candidates are qualified to enroll in undergraduate and graduate academic programs where English is the medium of instruction.
The General IELTS exam is the simpler test. It focuses on basic survival skills in social and educational contexts. It is generally requested for candidates applying for immigration, working in certain professions, or studying at a non-degree level.
The simple chart below shows the main similarities and differences in the General and Academic IELTS:

A note about your ID. You must provide the same ID on test day as you put on your application form – a different ID will result in you not being allowed to take the IELTS test. If for some reason, you have to renew your ID or if you lose it, contact the IELTS test centre immediately so that they can find some other way of verifying your identity. If you do not notify the IELTS test centre before test day your ID will not be acceptable.
Renewing your ID often results in a new number being issued. Some IELTS test centres also require a photocopy of your ID and if this is different, even if it has the same number, you will not be allowed to take the IELTS test. If in doubt, contact your IELTS test centre.
After completing the form, scan it together with the bank teller showing deposit of the appropriate registration fee and two passport sized photos.
Many centres do speaking interviews on a different day to the main test. If you need to have the interview on the same day as the main test be sure to write a covering letter indicating this and explaining why. The IELTS test centre will oblige if possible.
Once your application has been received and processed you will be sent a confirmation letter with details of the time and date of the test. You will also receive other instructions such as what to do on arrival, where to go and so on. Read these carefully. Every IELTS test centre is different so we can’t give you more specific details here.

Once you know the format that is available in your region or country, the next step would be to know about the syllabus of the exam. It will be very useful to go through some old IELTS tests and get hold of some good study material. You can study through books, in the coaching centre or with friends. Note that the choice of a good textbook is very important.
The second part of mental preparation is about keeping your mental peace during the examination. This will be possible if there are no external factors affecting you. It is important that you get to the test centre early enough, carrying the necessary item(s) for proof of identification with you and knowing the directions from your house to the test centre. This will not only give you confidence but also save a lot of time during the examination.
Time required for IELTS coaching/preparation entirely depends on the knowledge and skill you may have acquired in the past and the level may vary for students from different backgrounds. You can not exactly define the time required for the study but tentatively it may take up to a month for an average student. In this time you have to prepare yourself keeping in mind the format of the exam and also take as many practice tests as possible.
